Austral Bricks™ Supports 8-Star House for Display and Charity Auction
Austral Bricks™ has been pleased to support the design and construction of South Australia’s first 8-Star demonstration home.
The house is open to the public until early 2011 and will then be auctioned, with the proceeds supporting the important work of the Australian Cranio-Maxillo Facial Foundation which fosters training, education and research into facial reconstruction.
The Green Living Charity Home, located in the Adelaide Hills suburb of Blackwood Park, draws on proven environmental design principles and building materials to allow a high level of sustainability in a very liveable design.
Brickwork is at the core of the building and its energy-efficient design. Australian scientific research has proven that cavity brickwork can supply the required “thermal mass” to slow the passage of heat through a wall.
In concert with insulation, ventilation and orientation, thermal mass enables the building to be cooler in summer and warmer in winter, thus maintaining a high comfort level while reducing (and sometimes eliminating) the need for artificial heating and cooling.
The exterior is face brickwork – Nougat bricks from Austral Bricks Urban One® series and Foveaux from The Governors® series of traditional sandstock bricks – which further reduces the environmental load by not requiring expensive finishes such as render. The interior also features some face brickwork, but most internal walls are plaster-sheeted and painted.
Austral Bricks™ also supplied Aniseed™ clay pavers, a new addition to their extensive range, for the driveway, paths, garden borders and outdoor entertainment areas. Like their brick cousins, these pavers feature the many benefits of kiln-fired ceramic pavers: excellent slip resistance, extreme durability and natural, permanent colours.
The project was coordinated by the Master Builders Association of South Australia and drew on the generosity of a wide range of building product manufacturers, suppliers and tradespeople.
The Green Living Charity Home is located at 101 Bright Place, Blackwood Park and open for inspection from 1pm to 5pm Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
